Saturday
from Sappyfest 4 August 1.09
Saturday was a big day - main stage music, zine
fair, craft fair, Uncle Larry's music... phew. I bought some goodies
and got to experience Jon Rae Fletcher. I have seen him perform
with Jon Rae and the River, but was glad to catch a glimpse of
his solo work. Afterwards I got to get excited about Julie Doiron
again and see Calm Down It's Monday. They are a lovely three piece
and I felt it complimented my day just perfectly. The sun was
coming out and my surroundings were perfect. They capped off my
afternoon and I felt warm and fuzzy before I went back to home
base to drink more beer. But I suppose the beer helped with the
warmth and the fuzziness.
For
the evening shows, we gathered a big PEI crew to go down to the
mainstage, but we went a bit too late and the tent looked full.
We decided to stick around behind the stage so we had adequate
room to drink and dance, and I felt it was the best seat in the
house. Ladyhawk were the show stopper of the night and I am not
ashamed to say that I fist pumped more than once. They are a rock
band that delivers great ferocity and I was cool with getting
their sweat all over me. Their set jived me up and I knew it was
just the start of a great night.
Afterwards,
our group split up due to the D'urbervilles and BA Johnston were
playing at Uncle Larry's, whereas Mount Eerie was performing at
the Vogue theatre. It was a pretty tough decision but having learned
that Mount Eerie was booked to play Ampersand that Monday, I chose
the rockier show and felt good about my decision. BA Johnston
threw pool inflatables into the crowd, some drunk dude gave him
a Rev and he ended the night with the Littlest Hobo theme song.
After
that insanity, the D'urbervilles were up next and they kept me
interested in dancing for the rest of the night. I found their
music simple and likeable, in the best way possible of course.
Dancing to them just came so easy.
