Sunday
from Sappyfest 4 August 2.09
Sunday morning was a whole new start. My feet were
tired from the night before and I spent the day relaxed in the
Vogue Theatre or main stage tent and didn't try to cram too much
into my day. I'm lazy like that. We all witnessed the confusion
that was Gambletron. Our entire group left the theatre puzzled
afterwards as we weren't sure what really happened. It looked
interesting enough as they had bike tires set up on stangs and
were playing them with violin bows. We stuck around through the
longest sound check ever and I don't think anything was going
their way. They eventually just played a song on a discman and
proceeded to text and talk to their friends during the last song.
Bizarrrrre.
My
favourite discovery of the weekend is hands down going to Luyas.
I was stoked to hear that Jesse from S.S. Cardiacs was in this
band so maybe I was instantly inclined to enjoy. Her and members
of Bell Orchestre kept me intrigued with french horn as a leading
instrument and some sort of weird guitar/sitar hybrid? Still unsure
on that one, by the way. Regardless, Jesse kept me intrigued again
with her cute, quirky style of vocals. Their rock-pop (and sometimes
abstract) songs were not only catchy but interesting to watch
and I feel like a damn fool for not buying a CD. I got too caught
up, I guess.
The
cutest smile in Sackville, i.e. Shotgun Jimmie, closed out the
afternoon and got everyone out of their chairs and dancin' on
their feet. At one point he got Simone (from $100) to get on up
and sing my favourite track off his new record, "Quicksand".
I think at this point, everyone in the crowd caught his infectious
smile.
The
last evening led way to me being stupid and missing Clues (fuck!)
but catching lots more. Attack in Black seemed to have a revolving
door of guests on stage, including Julie Fader, Julie Doiron,
Shotgun Jimmie and Simone (again, from $100). I should note that
next to Julie Doiron, Simone seemed to be always popping up on
stage with people, and I was glad for it. Her voice is incredible
and $100 may be my country girl crush. Whoops. Anyyyyyways, Attack
in Black were incredible and I don't care how uncool it is to
like Wintersleep, I love 'em! Maybe I have a soft spot since they
were the very first bar show I attended, but they bang out a great
show and their new songs sounded heavenly.
Our
car crew was heading back late that evening, but a little birdy
tipped us off and we were told that the Constantines were playing
a secret show at George's Roadhouse. We get there nice and early
and attempted to secure one of the best spots in the joint. We
waited patiently and the rumours were true! And it was all Neil
Young covers! The Cons were joined on stage by Ladyhawk guitarist
and miss Simone yet again. They danced, sung and everyone took
a turn belting out their favourite Neil song. We danced as much
as our tiny confines allowed but eventually got shoved out of
the way by dumb bitches and pushy photographers so we took our
happiness to the parking lot. They ended the night with "Keep
on Rockin' in the Free World" and we all felt awesome to
have just been Sappy'd.
The
photos I have are what I could manage to capture between all of
the craziness that went down over the weekend. I didn't catch
near as much as I wanted to, but sometimes fun gets in the way
and it feels so good.
