Mannequin & Rae Spoon
from Baba's November 19.09 Joining him on this evening was Calgary native Rae Spoon, who I ADORED. I had missed him on several occasions in the past, but that night I spent my last dollars on "superioryouareinferior". We howled along with "We Become Our Own Wolves" and from then on I would make it a point to never miss Rae again. I guess I felt a bit of a connection with his songs concerning Calgary landmarks, and some general distaste for how that City can make you feel like an outsider. Regardless, it all worked for me. The second act of the evening was the Death Avengers from our lil' capital city. They are a pleasant combination of wit, rock and casio keyboard. With a new CD on the way, they seem to be playing tonnes, which is a delight to all of us who want to listen to carny songs in our car. Finally, the Wax Mannequin set was quite heavenly. On this trip, he came equipped with a band. Jason Vautour (from Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees and Alright Already) as well as Mike Belyea (Ermine) came from Halifax all dressed up - Wax Mannquin style. Although on this trip he wasn't covered in roses, he didn't need to be as every song he sang was more upbeat and happy than I've ever seen him. Don't be mistaken though - he still is one intense fuckin' dude.. Please click the images below to enlarge the photographs...
