FROM THE SHADOWS WITH AL TUCK. Al Tuck is getting ready to release his new record, Under Your Shadow on November 8th 2011 where he will promote it on his east-coast tour with Ox, an indie rock band from Sudbury, Ontario. The east coast tour will consist of seven stops, beginning November 3rd in Kingston, Ontario and finishing up on November the 11th in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Over the years, Tuck has taken his un-matched and unique voice to local bars and out-of-the-way places. It’s hard to categorize Tuck’s unique style but one may say it is folk or indie rock. He says his music is one-of-a-kind...
“I like stronger individuals like Merle Haggard and Bob Dylan. I try to combine all their styles and make it my own.”
Tuck was born in Summerside, Prince Edward Island on December 23rd, 1966. His music career spans over twenty years. His first record was released in 1994 and since then he released multiple records with Murderecords, Brobdingnagian, Youth Club Records and independently. Tuck performs at various places including coffee shops, bars, and college pubs. His musical role model is a Maritime star, Stompin’ Tom Connors.
“His approach to music is worth imitating.”
Tuck says Connors’ went against the way people expected things to work in the music business and that Connors tries to win people over a few a time, not all at once. Tuck’s favourite record so far is his newest record, Under Your Shadow, because it's fresh and new. His favourite song on his new album is the title track.
“It is meaningful but hard to say what it is about because it holds a lot in it.”
His second favourite record he released is Food For The Mood. “It would be my most ambitious and the record came out the way I wanted it.” In 2010 Tuck used his distinct voice in a different way. He was the voice in the animated short film, Higglety-Pigglety Pop produced by Spike Jonze. Tuck hopes to do it again in the future. “I haven’t been pursuing it a lot but it would be fun to do more. I like to think it will happen again.”
In a year from now Tuck hopes to have released another record.
“There is a lot of catching up I have to do. Some old stuff and some new stuff.” His goal in life is to be more active and busy in his music career. Tuck has a daughter who is just starting school his other goal in life is to do his best for his daughter. Tuck’s self motto is, “It is not where your going, but it is the path you use to get there."
