Dog Day by Matt Dixon, February / March '11

Dog Day have morphed into a two piece; Seth & Nancy and they have a new 7" coming out! They are also currently hitting up dates in California and Texas finishing off with the SXSW Festival. I'd like to thank the band for taking the time to answer my questions. Special thanks to Matt from ~Pigeon Row~.

1. Hi Seth & Nancy. I'm not sure if it's too late to say happy new year a month and a half into it, but happy new year to you both. Your musical project Dog Day has morphed into a duo. Could you talk a little about the change and what it means for the two of you moving forward?
Happy NY. Yes, we are a duo. We had been messing around just the two of us for awhile now, but didn't really have any plans to do anything seriously, I'm not sure what we were thinking exactly because we have been playing with so many other people for over ten years. Suddenly we had an opportunity to play alone and we just did it. It made sense and now we play together just us. Which is fun but it's hard in the gear lifting department --we haven't really downsized our gear amount, haha!

2. It's interesting, this upcoming 7" has been described as a bit of a return for the band in terms of a more dare-i-say minimalist style that you were known for during the Thank You period. I mean, if you contrast this record with some of your previous work, such as Elder Schoolhouse for example where it was pretty well unleashed, there's a very different and specific tone to this 7". Is this something we can expect from the upcoming LP as well?
The new record is more stripped down, in that it's just guitar and drums, and it's just the two of us. Thank You came from a similar place, recorded in a basement with just a few instruments. Elder Schoolhouse we did live except vocals and we were experimenting with lots of effects at the time. The 7" songs fit in nicely with the rest of the new record, they are all from the same batch.

3. It's an exciting next couple of months for you two from the band perspective; of course Scratches 7" comes out on March 22nd, you have plans to release a new LP in the spring, and you're also playing a few American dates including the 2011 South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas. What does playing SXSW mean to you and what do you hope to get out of the experience?
We have been wanting to go to SXSW for a while now. We were in Austin a few years ago and found that it really stood out as a city, it reminded me of Halifax. SXSW just seems like a good festival with a mix of indie bands and artists that are bigger as well. I am really excited to finally see the Obits. Also J Mascis is playing, and so much more. We just want to see some bands, old and new, play some shows ourselves, and just check out some scenes in far away lands.
