1.
Please introduce Scribbler and give some background behind the band.
Scribbler are a 5 sometimes 6 piece band from Halifax NS. We formed
in 2005, had a moog player then he quit and moved back to Moncton,
so we played as a four piece for a while, until 2006 when we found
new wave, he's our k-station player. We have a temporary drummer while
Franc is in South America. 2.
What does Scribbler mean to you?
Scribbler is the main focus of Craig Currie (me), I write the most
of the songs and have dreams of us practicing them.
3. Where does Scribbler
draw its influences from?
Psychedelic Pop, Folk rock, Experimental Rock, Kraut Rock, Noise-Rock,
Dream Pop, Lo-Fi, Noise, Avant-Garde, Industrial, Sound Collage, Obscuro,
Ambient, New Age, Local demos, Children's Music, Sing along, pre-war
blues, Grunge, Acid Folk, Power Electronics
4. Could you tell
me a bit about the evolution of the band, from a free noise project
to a bent-folk/experimental band?
We released our first album 'Scannopapia' in 2005, it was a free release
with 29 noise, ambient, experimental .... songs/clips on it. After
its release we were offered a spot at the hamburger party (a noise
show in Halifax). Then we stated doing random noise shows, we would
play noise sets with regular bands and give no 'warning', so the crowd
never knew what they were gonna get, we really piss some folks off
at times.
5. What are some of
the things you try to communicate through the music?
We try to convince the crowd to have ritualistic orgies with us after
the show.
6. Could you tell
me a bit about the Radiator Collective and what your part is in it?
We release compilations far from never, we're really slack. It's mostly
projects other members of the band are in. My brother Alex Currie
fronts 'Journalists, Wolf, and is Fuck Montreal. Him and our temp
drummer Mike Dorton make the 'Money over Bitches' songs. Mike also
does 'Hoop Dreams' and played in The Lampshapes. Franc writes pretty
folk songs that we do with Scribbler sometimes. Nathan Pilon (new
wave) plays in 'Windom Earle. I (Craig Currie) do Chief Thundercloud
and drum in a band called Omon Ra. The radiator collective is just
a big inbred mess. Look for our second comp never.

You're scheduled to play the Obey Convention this spring; what is
your take on the current state of punk rock / experimental fringe
music in Halifax?
Punk in Halifax does it for me sometimes. The experimental scene is
always growing, places in the north end are good for holding shows,
or house shows. A place called the Blue Moon has a free jam every
Tuesday, it's full of crazy folk.
8. When do you think
the best moment to listen to a Scribbler record is?
Our two musical albums ' Prussia' (2006) and 'Backitis' (2007) are
probobly good to listen to whenever. It's never a good time to listen
to our noise albums, 'Scannopapia' (2005) , 'Scandopapia' (2008),
unless you want to kill a party.
9. What are the last
five records you bought and your current top five?
I get stuff mailed or given to me mostly. The last record I bought
was a Divorse cassete. Top five would have to be: in this order
1) Syd Barrett- the mad cap laughs
2) Can- Ege Bamyasi
3) Beck- golden feelings
4) Half Japenese- Loud
5) Disco Inferno- D. I pop go
10. What's up next
for the band? Any new records or tours in the works?
We wrote a bunch of new songs without Franc, so we want to release
those as an e. p or somthing. And Franc and I haver been writing slow
folk songs that we want to release on a folk album called 'Abiogenesis'.
Mike has been making songs for our third noise release 'Scanyopapia'.
