Making
Charlottetown Rad November 7.07

When
Stephan sent me an email asking for a show for his band Windom
Earle and Baltimore party sensation, The Death Set, I couldn't
refuse. I didn't have any idea where I would put the show or how
it would go over in Charlottetown, but I was determined to make
it work.
I
approached those rascals at The Hutch and asked how they felt
about the show. I had booked The Superfantastics to play in their
basement a couple of months earlier; it had gone over really well,
and as expected their response was very positive. Like me, they
were all fans of Windom Earle and trusted that whoever he was
bringing with him, one thing was certain: they would be rad as
hell.
Not
many of us were familiar with The Death Set, the spastic party
group that had been transplanted from Australia to Baltimore,
and we weren't aware of the exploding Baltimore DIY scene they
were coming from. By the end of the night we had all experienced
first hand the power and excitement that had driven them from
the United States to our little town.
We
packed the Hutch to capacity and unfortunately had to turn away
a number of late comers. No one had predicted the large numbers,
nor did we expect their enthusiasm. Close to ninety sweaty bodies
crammed into the tiny basement and danced their faces off. Crowd
surfing was achieved, clothes were removed, the pipes dripped
from the collective condensation, and we all nearly passed out
from the nonstop dance party. New Royalty played their first show
to a packed house and really set things in motion for the epic
dance offs that were to come.
The
kids made Charlottetown rad for a night. Everyone left with exhausted
smiles from ear to ear as outside we embraced the fresh cool air
of the quiet Charlottetown suburbs. We used our indoor voices
and thanked everyone for coming out and sharing the experience.
