I
think it's pretty safe to say that this was the show that defined
the kind of venue JFK House could be. It was a wild night featuring
The Superfantastics, Shotgun Jimmie (advertised as a secret band),
New Royalty (with baked treats!), The Barnkats and The Right Crowd.
It was the kickoff show for The Superfantastics Canadian Tour
and it also served as the CD Release show for The Right Crowd;
excitement was in the air.
The
night marked the fourth time I had booked The Superfantastics
a show in Charlottetown, and they just keep getting better and
better. Their fun and cute but not too cute music is both endearing
and honest.
The
thing that really struck me about this show was how respectful
and fun everyone was. We packed about sixty bodies into the JFK
living room / stairs / kitchen and yet there were very few problems.
Shotgun Jimmie started the show by playing his brand of minimalist
indie folk to a cozy and appreciative crowd. There were only about
thirty people there when he started, but by the end of his set
the room was full of gaping mouths and looks of amazement.
When
The Superfantastics began with their signature cute but not too
cute indie pop sound, the crowd was ready to sway. Cameras flashed
as hands were held and silly faces were made. When The Right Crowd
took the "stage" the crowd erupted into a posi freak
out. No elbows were thrown, no spinkicks connected, but all who
danced did so hard and free, but with care not to cause any harm
to the crowded bodies or the walls.
It
was an amazing turnout for a show which had undergone a last minute
venue change from the Haviland Club to JFK. About a week before
the show The Haviland Club called to inform me that they were
concerned with the type of crowd the event would bring in. I couldn't
help but laugh at their ignorance, knowing they had no concept
of what these shows were about: community, positivity, and friendship.
If they could have seen us on this night they would have egg on
their faces, ashamed of pegging us as misfits and closing their
doors to us. On this night I couldn't have been more proud.
