Andrea's
Real Life Animal Adventures by
Andrea Cormier, Prince Edward Island
IInspired
by the works of real-life animal adventurists such as Farley Mowat
(Never Cry Wolf), Robert Franklin Leslie (The Bears & I) and Andy
Russell (Andy Russell's Adventures with Wild Animals), Cornwall, Prince
Edward Island native Andrea C decided to create a zine of her very
own animal adventures from the red squirrel to the great blue heron
and everything in between! In the two issues of Andrea's Real-Life
Animal Adventures (the second of which will be posted right here in
the near future), Andrea paints of a wonderful picture of Prince Edward
Island, and Canada's often overlooked but never the less fascinating
wildlife. A must read.

Andrea's
Real Life Animal Adventures #2 by
Andrea Cormier, Prince Edward Island
Cornwall,
Prince Edwad Island zinester Andrea Cormier is back with another contribution
to the Maritime Zine Archive. On Thursday we brought you the first
issue of Andrea's Real-Life Animal Adventures and unsurprisingly
you all ate it up. Well, it's Friday and we're back with issue number
two! Andrea comes back with more animal sightings and a little Q&A
to boot! On the inspirational influence of Andy Russell: "I accidentally
discovered him at the library. My favourite book is “Trails
of a Wilderness Wanderer” which describes his life as a bronc-busting,
trail-guiding, mountaineering outdoorsman in the Alberta foothills
& Rocky Mountains in the early 20th century. Sigh!! He was also
an advocate for protecting wildlife / natural spaces. He wrote other
books about his encounters with bears, cougars, mountain goats, etc...
I thought - well, I haven’t had any near-death bear encounters,
but I HAVE seen some weird squirrels, funny teenage pigeons, and a
seal eating an octopus - why not write about that? I actually mailed
Andy Russell a copy of my first zine and wrote him a little letter
about how I had read all his books. Creepy? Most definitely. I never
did hear back. He died in 2005."

Boxlor
by
Mike Lecky & Jonah Campbell, Prince Edward Island
Boxlor
was a zine created by Mike Lecky & Jonah Campbell. But, I'll
let them explain: "Why? Well, high school I guess. Boxlor
was born out of (birthed from as it were) the minds of two creative
and misguided teenage boys, early in the summer of the year 1999.
The Adventures of Boxlor ran as an online feature (really
more of an ouevre) on superfunk and aioku.com until the strip was
picked up by the UPEI student newspaper, The Cadre, where the final
storylines were churned out under the supervision and heavy-handed,
gestapo-esque editing of Kent assface Bruyneel.

Can I Punk Mail My Heart? by
Various Talented Individuals , Canada
The following is a wonderfully inspired collaborative effort linking punx across Canada from coast to coast to coast. It features stuff from a few notable Prince Edward Island residents: Story and Cud Eastbound (now residing in Halifax) and a slew of other musicians from across the country. The compilation can be downloaded for your enjoyment. DIY efforts like these is what it's all about.

Don't
Fall Asleep #4 by
Christina, Prince Edward Island
Don't
Fall Asleep is a brave little zine by Charlottetown, Prince Edward
Island's Christina. Put together from November 2003 to March 2004
Issue #4 covers a lot of ground; from a look at long distance relationships
and breaking up, getting haircuts from best friends, ice skating in
Ottawa, homemade banana bread with peanut butter icing, and so much
more. As usual Don't Fall Asleep is both raw, honest, endearing, inspiring,
and jam packed with beautiful and perfectly selected artwork. I've
always been a big fan of Christina's zines; I find they just wash
over you like a good personal zine should. I can't thank her enough
for submitting her work to the zine archive.

Ivurineformation
#1 by
Stephan MacLeod, Prince Edward Island
Ivurinformation
#1 is a loveable rough and tumble piece of work made by Stephan
MacLeod (Windom Earle Fame) back in '97. This is zine really packs
a punch! I recently asked Stephan a few questions about the zine:
"I think I was compelled by the idea of using a photocopier and
making something that resembled my favourite magazines. The idea that
I could produce a physical product was almost more exciting than the
content. It was liberating to feel like I was accomplishing something
on very small scale - troubleshooting how the layout will work, and
teaching myself very basic design. But I would never consider myself
a true zine maker. I only made three."

Jetplane
by
Mike Lecky, Prince Edward Island
This
fantastic zine from Charlottetown's Mike Saturday Lecky (Loose Teeth
Press) is finally available online. Jetplane made its way
to me back in 2006 when my friend Christina (who had previously been
taking care of it for Mike) gave me the master copy.
Nearly five years later it makes its way online... sorry about the
delay. This
is a real treat for me to be able to put this up on the webzine. I
hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have. Mike
has made another zine and has called it Bruce Springstzine.
You can preview it at www.heartofcopper.com
or purchase it directly from his Vancouver based publishing company
Loose Teeth Press.

The
New Technology by
Stephan MacLeod, Prince Edward Island
This
zine comes from Charlottetown's Stephan MacLeod, perhaps better known
as the charismatic frontman and founder of screw wave dance party
band Windom Earle. The New Technology was also the title
of an early Windom Earle release, so it should come as no surprise
that both The New Technology CD + Zine were actually released together.
You'll recognize some of the contributors listed in the zine; names
like Kent Bruyneel (future editor of Forget Magazine), and Jeff Coll
(of the Jeff Coll Five).

Profile: Christina Prince
Edward Island
Don't
Fall Asleep is a brave little zine by Charlottetown, Prince Edward
Island's Christina. I've always been a big fan of Christina's zines;
I find they just wash over you like a good personal zine should. I
can't thank her enough for submitting her work to the zine archive
and agreeing to the following interview: "In the spring of 2001
after my first year of university I made my first zine, Expectations
of Deterioration (EoD). It was a tiny perzine of which I made about
10 copies, enough for my group of friends at the time plus a couple
penpals. After I moved to Ontario in the fall of that year, I started
getting into mail-order in a huge way and had Don’t Fall Asleep
distributed at a handful of distros in Canada, the US, and New Zealand.
Since then I have scaled way back and make zines solely for myself,
my penpals and From The Heart Distro."
